Plot Summary

The Painted (2024) is a slow-burning psychological horror that immerses you in a world where art, obsession, and madness collide. Elliot Granger (Nicholas Hoult) is a once-promising artist living in self-imposed isolation in an eerie countryside manor. After a long creative drought, he stumbles upon an ancient canvas buried in the attic of his estate. The painting—unfinished, yet hypnotic—begins to consume his thoughts. He decides to complete it, unaware that the artwork has a sinister legacy tied to a series of mysterious deaths spanning centuries.

As he begins painting, his reality starts to unravel. Shadows move on their own, and visions of a pale, veiled figure start haunting him during the night. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Clara, a skeptical art historian who arrives to document the cursed artwork and uncovers the painting's history of madness and obsession. Meanwhile, Willem Dafoe delivers a chilling performance as the ghost of the painting’s original artist—an eccentric genius who vanished mysteriously after completing only half of it.

The story grows increasingly disturbing as Elliot's body begins to deteriorate and his mind descends into chaos. The painting appears to change form when no one's watching. Is it sentient? Is it feeding on its creators? When Clara uncovers the truth—that the painting was once used in occult rituals to trap souls—they realize it may not just be haunted. It might be alive.

Now caught between artistic obsession and a supernatural curse, Elliot must choose whether to destroy his masterpiece or surrender himself to it. But the longer he delays, the more the painting paints him.
