Mike Lawford (Nicolas Cage) is a New York City literature professor struggling to balance his work and family life. On Halloween night, while attending a festive carnival with his young son Charlie, a brief moment of distraction leads to a devastating disappearance—Charlie vanishes into thin air, uttering the cryptic phrase: "Pay the ghost."

Haunted by guilt and confusion, Mike becomes obsessed with finding his son. As months pass and police investigations fail, disturbing visions, spectral signs, and ghostly whispers begin to invade his life. With the help of his estranged wife Kristen (Sarah Wayne Callies), Mike uncovers chilling links to an ancient Celtic curse tied to Halloween, vengeful spirits, and a dark portal between the living and the dead.
